A recent investigation by The Wall Street Journal has uncovered a disturbing practice by Polymarket, a prediction market company. The firm has been secretly paying social media creators to produce and share fake betting videos, misleading viewers into believing they can win big on the platform. After reviewing 1,105 videos on TikTok, the publication found that nearly 70% of the content appeared to show individuals placing bets, but upon closer inspection, none of these videos featured the actual Polymarket website. Instead, they used mock sites designed to mimic the real thing.
Furthermore, over half of the videos showcasing winning bets would have actually resulted in losses. Creators who worked with Polymarket revealed that they were provided with guidance on how to craft convincing and engaging content. The company also allegedly enlisted a network of social media users to repost these videos, helping them gain traction online. This revelation comes at a time when governments are struggling to regulate prediction markets, with some states in the US and countries like Spain taking steps to ban or block these platforms.
As the debate around regulation continues, this exposé raises important questions about the transparency and integrity of companies like Polymarket.
