Panic, the maker of the distinctive Playdate handheld, has established a new policy for its official game marketplace. The company now prohibits titles that employ generative AI for creative assets. Starting this month, the Playdate Catalog will reject submissions using AI tools for art, audio, music, or narrative text.
The move follows the announcement of Playdate's third season of bundled games. While Panic permits AI-assisted programming—with clear labeling for consumers—the seasonal titles face stricter rules. Developers for Season Three were contractually barred from using AI for any aspect, including code. This clarification came after a Season Two title utilized AI for writing and scripting, prompting questions from the community.
Specifically banned tools include large language models like ChatGPT, image generators such as Stable Diffusion, and audio systems like Suno. Existing catalog games with AI elements will remain but must display detailed disclosures. Panic notes its stance is "under constant discussion" and may evolve.
This policy creates a curated, human-made experience within the official store. However, the Playdate's open sideloading capability means AI-generated games aren't completely locked out; they simply won't have the visibility or distribution of Catalog titles. For now, Panic is drawing a clear line for developers who want to reach its audience directly.
