In a stunning reversal, the Department of Defense has banned the use of Anthropic's AI technology, designating the company a supply chain risk - a label typically reserved for foreign adversaries. This move follows a months-long review initiated last year by Pentagon technology chief Emil Michael. It effectively voids a $200 million contract awarded to Anthropic just weeks before Michael assumed oversight of the DOD's AI portfolio.
The decision has left military planners without the AI models they had selected for sensitive operations. In response, Anthropic filed a lawsuit against the federal government on Monday, calling the actions 'unprecedented and unlawful' and stating they threaten hundreds of millions in contracts.
Defense experts express deep concern. 'Something is so necessary that you need to invoke the Defense Production Act and so harmful that you put a designation on it reserved for foreign adversaries. I don't know how those two things can both be true,' said Mark Dalton, a retired Navy rear admiral now at the R Street Institute.
The ban is particularly jarring because Anthropic's Claude AI was the first such model deployed on the Pentagon's classified networks and was praised for its integration with major contractors like Palantir. Military personnel had come to rely on its reliability and user-friendly outputs for planning. 'They view Claude as being a better product,' said former DOD official Brad Carson, who now leads Americans for Responsible Innovation.
Founded in 2021 by ex-OpenAI researchers, Anthropic built its reputation on responsible AI deployment. Its rapid commercialization, including a major partnership with Amazon Web Services, helped it gain significant traction within federal agencies. The company's current $380 billion valuation now faces immense pressure as it navigates this unprecedented government blockade.
