When Oracle reports its third-quarter earnings on Tuesday, the focus will be squarely on the financial reality of its aggressive push into artificial intelligence. The enterprise software giant's massive data center expansion, fueled by a $50 billion financing plan announced in February, has left investors weighing the cost against the potential reward.

Oracle has leaned more heavily on debt and equity markets than its cloud rivals to fund this buildout. A recent $30 billion debt offering, while oversubscribed, has heightened sensitivity around its balance sheet. The core question is whether the returns from its landmark partnership with OpenAI will justify the expense.

That partnership remains central. A source familiar with the matter told CNBC that Oracle's commitment to deliver eight data center sites to OpenAI is on schedule, despite reports that a planned expansion in Abilene, Texas, was shelved. An OpenAI executive confirmed the company is developing more than half a dozen sites nationwide, including a new project with Oracle in Wisconsin.

Investor nerves are palpable. News of the OpenAI deal last September sent Oracle shares soaring 35% in a single day. But a surprise debt raise months later triggered concerns about costs, pressuring the company's credit metrics. Some bond investors have even used credit default swaps to hedge their exposure to Oracle's AI strategy.

Analysts will be listening for clarity on the investment's payoff and any future funding plans. TD Cowen suggested in a January note that Oracle could consider workforce reductions or asset sales to streamline costs and generate cash. Tuesday's report will serve as a critical checkpoint, revealing how one of the industry's most expensive AI bets is holding up under financial pressure.
