OpenAI is reportedly preparing to launch its first major hardware product: a smart speaker designed for conversational interaction with ChatGPT. According to a Bloomberg report, the device will lack a screen but will incorporate a camera and other sensors to interpret its surroundings. The company aims to release the gadget in 2027, marking a significant step into physical products.

The speaker will feature a rechargeable battery for portability, along with smart home controls, media playback, and the ability to answer questions and manage messages. It will run on GPT-Live, OpenAI's upgraded voice model announced recently. Bloomberg also notes the device will include moving mechanical parts intended to create a more humanlike connection with users. This follows earlier reports from February about a similar camera-equipped device that could recognize objects and people.

OpenAI is collaborating with former Apple designer Jony Ive on the new hardware, after acquiring his design company io Products for nearly $6.5 billion. The smart speaker is part of a broader hardware lineup that Bloomberg says includes about five devices. Separately, OpenAI has teased a Codex Micro gadget, developed with Work Louder, set for release on July 15. The company declined to comment on the Bloomberg report, which arrives just days after Apple sued OpenAI, accusing it of stealing hardware secrets. OpenAI stated it has seen no evidence supporting the lawsuit.
