OpenAI, the US company behind the popular chatbot ChatGPT, is reconsidering its plans to go public in 2026. According to The New York Times, citing three sources close to the situation, the company may postpone its initial public offering (IPO) until 2027 due to the current instability in the stock market and the poor performance of Elon Musk's SpaceX shares after their record-breaking IPO. OpenAI filed for an IPO about two weeks ago, with the company stating at the time that no decision had been made on the timing. However, media reports suggested that the IPO could take place in the second half of this year.
Consultants hired by OpenAI have reportedly advised the company to either proceed with the IPO in 2026 at a lower valuation or delay it until the desired valuation of $1 trillion is reached, a level insisted upon by CEO Sam Altman. As of the end of March, OpenAI's valuation stood at $852 billion, although a previous private valuation had put the figure at $730 billion. The company's decision will be closely watched, given its significant impact on the tech industry and the growing interest in AI and machine learning technologies.
