OpenAI to Combine ChatGPT's Chat and Work Tabs

OpenAI is preparing to merge the Chat and Work tabs inside ChatGPT, according to an email sent to users. The company said the combined experience will first go to select users for feedback before a wider rollout.

In the email, OpenAI said the change will let people move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through in one place. Users will be able to bring in files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or do things on the web while reviewing and guiding its work. Codex will remain a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app.

OpenAI also said ChatGPT and Codex will draw tokens from the same allowance pool. The company said this won't affect most users, but depending on usage and model, some may need to wait for resets more often.

The move follows rival Anthropic's decision in September to merge Claude's chat and Cowork functions into one screen.
