OpenAI Shutters Prism Project as Product Lead Kevin Weil Departs

OpenAI is discontinuing its Prism project and losing the executive behind it. Kevin Weil, the former chief product officer who was leading the initiative, is leaving the company. Prism, launched as a web application in January, was designed as a specialized workspace for scientists to collaborate with AI models.

The company confirmed it is winding down Prism and integrating its approximately ten-person team into a different group led by Thibault Sottiaux, which focuses on Codex. Codex is OpenAI's system for translating natural language into computer code. An OpenAI spokesperson described the move as an effort to consolidate business and product strategy, indicating a sharper focus on developing Codex into a more versatile, multi-purpose tool.

Weil, a seasoned product executive with a background that includes early leadership roles at Instagram, joined OpenAI in 2023. His departure follows a recent internal shift where he was assigned to build Prism. The changes suggest a strategic pivot at OpenAI, prioritizing the expansion of its core coding assistant over niche scientific applications. The company's broader vision appears to center on evolving Codex into a comprehensive platform for a wide range of tasks.
