In a rapid realignment of federal AI procurement, OpenAI has secured a contract to deploy its artificial intelligence models within the Pentagon's classified networks. The announcement, made by CEO Sam Altman on social media late Friday, came mere hours after the White House moved decisively against its competitor.

Earlier that day, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth formally designated Anthropic a "Supply-Chain Risk to National Security," a move that triggered an immediate directive from President Donald Trump for all federal agencies to cease using the company's technology. The order allows a six-month transition period for existing systems.

This pivot marks a significant reversal. Anthropic had been the first AI lab to place its models on the military's classified systems under a $200 million contract last July. Those negotiations ultimately failed after the company sought binding assurances its software would not be used for autonomous weapons or domestic mass surveillance—conditions the Defense Department declined to accept.

In its statement, Anthropic expressed deep disappointment with the designation and announced plans for a legal challenge, warning the decision could reshape how technology firms engage with government contracts.

Altman emphasized that OpenAI's own ethical guardrails, which prohibit domestic mass surveillance and mandate human responsibility for force-related decisions, are codified within the new agreement. The swift contract award, however, has not been without controversy, drawing criticism online from some users and political figures who accuse the company of abandoning earlier principles.

The back-to-back developments underscore the intense political and ethical scrutiny defining government adoption of advanced artificial intelligence, with major contracts and corporate reputations now hanging in the balance.
