In a move that reshapes the technology industry's financial landscape, OpenAI has closed a $110 billion funding round, one of the largest in history. The investment consortium is led by Amazon, contributing $50 billion, with NVIDIA and SoftBank each adding $30 billion. This colossal infusion of capital values the AI pioneer at approximately $730 billion.
Beyond the sheer scale of the funding, the announcement cements profound strategic partnerships. OpenAI has named Amazon Web Services (AWS) as the exclusive third-party cloud provider for its Frontier enterprise platform and will use AWS infrastructure to host models for business clients. In a significant reciprocal commitment, OpenAI has agreed to purchase 2 gigawatts of computing capacity from Amazon's custom Trainium AI accelerators. Notably, $35 billion of Amazon's total commitment is contingent on OpenAI meeting specific, undisclosed milestones.
OpenAI's long-running collaboration with NVIDIA also intensifies. The company has pledged to utilize 2 gigawatts of training capacity on NVIDIA's upcoming Vera Rubin systems and an additional 3 gigawatts of resources for AI inference work. These deals create a powerful, interlocking ecosystem between the AI software leader and its core hardware providers.
Despite the staggering investment, OpenAI's financial path remains challenging. The company anticipates losses of $14 billion for 2026, following an estimated $8 billion loss in 2025. Yet, leadership projects a bold turnaround, forecasting $100 billion in annual revenue by 2029. In a statement, CEO Sam Altman expressed confidence, simply stating, "AI is going to happen everywhere." The scale of these new partnerships suggests the industry is betting he is right.
