SAN FRANCISCO—OpenAI is no longer just a research lab. The creator of ChatGPT is now a serious enterprise contender, methodically turning viral fame into a corporate sales engine. According to a report in The Information, registered users for its business products, ChatGPT Enterprise and Business, have jumped to over 600,000—a fourfold increase since last August.

This shift is fueling remarkable financial growth. Bloomberg reported the company has surpassed a $2 billion annualized revenue run rate. While consumer subscriptions started the money flow, OpenAI's future hinges on large corporate contracts. The scale is already significant: Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap stated that 92% of Fortune 500 companies use ChatGPT in some form, as noted by Fortune. His team's job is to turn that casual use into paid, company-wide deals.

Led by Lightcap, a former finance executive, OpenAI is building a sales operation from scratch. The pitch to executives focuses on control and security. ChatGPT Enterprise promises company data won't train OpenAI's models and offers advanced administrative controls, a direct answer to early corporate hesitation.

This enterprise charge creates a nuanced dance with key partner Microsoft, which has invested over $13 billion and sells OpenAI models through its Azure cloud. Now, OpenAI's own salespeople are knocking on the same corporate doors, creating a delicate competitive overlap.

They aren't alone. Rivals like Anthropic, backed by Google and Amazon, and Google's own Gemini, embedded in Workspace, are fighting for the same budgets. For OpenAI, securing these enterprise deals is more than a strategy; it's the revenue required to fund its expensive, long-term research ambitions. The boardroom, it seems, is the new necessary frontier.
