OpenAI has released a substantial upgrade to its Codex developer tool, a move that serves as a public preview of its broader strategy. The company confirmed last month it is developing a unified desktop application combining ChatGPT, Codex, and a browser. While that product isn't ready, this Codex update reveals the technical foundation being laid.
Thibault Sottiaux, leading the Codex project, described the approach as building the larger application in public view. "This release is for developers," Sottiaux noted. "Later, we will expand it to a wider audience."
The new version introduces AI agents capable of operating across a wider range of tasks. A key addition is computer use, allowing these agents to interact with other software on a user's machine. A developer can direct a model to use a specific program or let it choose. OpenAI contends its method for running these agents minimizes system strain, enabling smoother collaboration between user and AI.
Codex now includes 111 new plugins, integrating various skills and developer tools to gather context and complete work. It also features a built-in browser with a commenting system, letting users instruct Codex to adjust specific elements of a webpage or application directly. During a demonstration, a team member used it to correct a graph's truncated axis.
Image generation is integrated, powered by gpt-image-1.5, for creating mockups, designs, or game assets. Codex can also use screenshots to verify its work against a user's intent.
The update previews two memory functions. One lets Codex apply learnings from past tasks to new requests, aiming for faster, higher-quality results over time. The other uses gathered context to propose actions, such as prompting a user to address a colleague's comment on a shared document at the start of the day.
The updated Codex is beginning its rollout to desktop users logged into ChatGPT. Computer use debuts for macOS, with EU and UK availability coming later. Those regions will also see a delay for the new memory features.
