OpenAI Rolls Out GPT-5.6 This Thursday: Meet Sol, Terra, and Luna

OpenAI is launching its next-generation AI model family this Thursday, CEO Sam Altman confirmed on Wednesday. The GPT-5.6 lineup includes three distinct models: Sol, Terra, and Luna. Sol is the flagship, designed for deep reasoning tasks and managing AI agents. Terra sits in the middle as a balanced option for capability and cost, while Luna is the fastest and cheapest to run. OpenAI says the series represents a major step forward in cybersecurity, with improved safety guardrails. Sol also produces fewer factual errors - hallucinations - than previous models.

The company first announced GPT-5.6 back in June, but has deliberately held back on its release. Like Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5, these models are considered among the most advanced AI publicly available, and that caution reflects a broader industry trend. For the first time, the U.S. government is playing a direct role in slowing releases. In early June, President Trump signed an executive order requiring the Defense Department to set up a voluntary system where AI developers share access to new frontier models with the government. Officials then have 30 days to review the tech and flag any concerns. OpenAI says it gave the government and some unnamed trusted partners early access, but declined to name them. A White House official told CNET that the government did not give OpenAI a green light for the release - and that none was needed under the order, since all engagement is voluntary.

This marks a notable shift in Washington's stance on AI. The Trump administration had long argued that regulation would slow innovation and cede the global AI race to China. Now, with government oversight gaining traction, the pace of model releases is changing - and so is the U.S.'s reputation as a tech leader. We'll know more about availability for Sol, Terra, and Luna on Thursday.
