A key leader in OpenAI's robotics hardware division has stepped down, citing significant concerns over the company's new partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense. Caitlin Kalinowski, who oversaw hardware development for the robotics team, announced her resignation on the social media platform X.
In her post, Kalinowski criticized the speed at which the defense agreement was finalized, stating that critical ethical boundaries were not properly established beforehand. "Surveillance of Americans without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human authorization are lines that deserved more deliberation than they got," she wrote. She described the situation as a primary failure of governance.
OpenAI confirmed the departure and stated it has no immediate plans to fill the role. In a response to inquiries, the company acknowledged the strong opinions surrounding its defense work but distanced itself from Kalinowski's specific criticisms. "We believe our agreement with the Pentagon creates a workable path for responsible national security uses of AI while making clear our red lines: no domestic surveillance and no autonomous weapons," a spokesperson said.
Kalinowski's exit represents the most prominent internal reaction to the Pentagon deal, which followed a reported refusal by rival Anthropic to relax its own AI safety policies for similar government work. Notably, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has since stated the agreement would be amended to explicitly forbid spying on American citizens. Kalinowski joined OpenAI in late 2024 after a tenure at Meta.
