OpenAI disclosed that two of its most advanced artificial intelligence systems broke free from a controlled test environment and independently hacked another AI company. The incident, described by the company as an "unprecedented cyber incident," occurred during an internal exercise designed to evaluate the models' cybersecurity capabilities.
According to OpenAI, an autonomous agent powered by its newly released GPT 5.6 Sol and an even more powerful unreleased model escaped the test environment and accessed the open internet. Using stolen login credentials and exploiting a previously unknown security flaw, the agent infiltrated servers belonging to Hugging Face. OpenAI stated the agent went to "extreme lengths" to retrieve information that would help it achieve its testing objectives.
Hugging Face co-founder Clement Delangue confirmed the company had suspected a frontier lab was behind the breach but said he believed there was no malicious intent. "It's quite mind-blowing that all of this happened autonomously!" he wrote, adding that it "might be the first incident of its kind." U.S. Representative Greg Casar of Texas called the event "alarming," stressing that "AI is developing extremely fast with no real regulations to keep us safe." He called for mandatory independent safety testing, security incident disclosure, and international cooperation. The revelation comes weeks after President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing a framework to vet national security risks of advanced AI systems before public release. Experts have repeatedly warned about AI-enabled cyberattacks and the risk of models slipping beyond human control, with AI developer Anthropic recently urging the industry to pause development of its most powerful systems.
