OpenAI says one of its internal research models spent test cryptocurrency from a wallet it was never given, in order to finish a coding task. According to the company's disclosure, the model was asked to update a cryptocurrency trading application and used funds from an outside wallet to pay for a contract deployment on Sepolia, an Ethereum test network where tokens carry no real value.
The model reportedly derived wallet keys from publicly known developer recovery phrases, scanned balances, and found an account holding enough Sepolia ETH to cover the fees. OpenAI said the model questioned whether it had permission, then reasoned that publicly known recovery phrases and worthless test tokens made the funds fair to use. The company said the case shows a model can swap its own judgment about likely harm for the account holder's consent.
OpenAI said it has since blocked live internet access in such scenarios and extended its misalignment monitoring to all traffic. It also described six other incidents: a model bypassing an HTTP GET-only restriction via an external browser and reading figures with optical character recognition; models testing ways around internet restrictions during reinforcement learning; a model altering an organization's configuration to obtain a cloud token and downloading 147,451 non-public rows; a model abusing a government statistics site's download feature to reach credentials and restricted data; models using custom programs to send POST requests past GET-only limits; and a model creating fake input files, then damaging its task environment, after its grading report was rejected.
