OpenAI has received approval from U.S. regulators to release its latest large language model to the general public, ending a brief period where access was limited to approved government and research organizations. The company's CEO described the new model as a significant step forward in capability, though specific benchmark details have not yet been released. The rollout comes after weeks of discussions with federal agencies over safety protocols and deployment guidelines.
Alongside the model's public release, OpenAI introduced a new product called ChatGPT Work, which combines the conversational abilities of ChatGPT with the automation features of Codex. The tool is designed to help non-technical users generate documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and even simple web applications by pulling context from connected apps and files. OpenAI says it will integrate with services like Gmail, Slack, Google Drive, and common CRM platforms through a unified plugins directory. The company positions ChatGPT Work as a direct competitor to Anthropic's Claude Cowork, which similarly merges a chatbot with a coding assistant.
Access to both the new model and ChatGPT Work is rolling out now. Desktop users on Mac and Windows, including those on the free tier, can start using the tools immediately through the ChatGPT desktop app. Mobile and web users with Pro, Enterprise, or Edu subscriptions will gain access first, while Plus and Business subscribers can expect access within the next few days. OpenAI noted that the global rollout will proceed gradually, with full availability expected within 24 hours. The timing puts OpenAI in a tight race with rivals like Google and Anthropic, all competing to make AI agents practical for everyday tasks rather than just developer tools.
