OpenAI announced Monday a new independent advisory group based at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Named the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, it aims to give mathematicians more say in the company's math-focused research. "This group will serve as a bridge to the mathematical community and broader public, giving mathematicians a voice in how we move forward," OpenAI said.

The news follows the sudden release of a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem. OpenAI also claims the same internal model has cracked more than 100 other open problems across most areas of mathematics. Many mathematicians have objected to the rapid-fire pace. Earlier this month, 25 Fields Medal winners signed an open letter saying AI labs are threatening their intellectual work as they race to solve famous problems.

The group will mainly advise, judging the importance of new results and coordinating their release. Members won't be paid but can offer unsolicited advice, speak publicly, and control their own membership, giving them some independence. However, they cannot slow or redirect OpenAI's math research. "The group will not be responsible for advising us on how to pace our internal progress on mathematics," the company said. The Institute for Advanced Study stressed it has no decision-making power at any AI company. Nine mathematicians are initial members; only one, IAS's Camillo De Lellis, also signed the Fields Medalists' letter.
