In a significant move to bolster its presence in India, OpenAI has appointed Prabhjeet Singh, former president of Uber India and South Asia, as its first managing director for the country. Singh will join the company in September, reporting to Kiran Mani, managing director for Asia Pacific. His role will encompass driving consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement, and operations in India, which OpenAI considers its second-largest market after the US. This strategic hire underscores OpenAI's commitment to the Indian market, where it has already established an office in New Delhi and plans to open additional offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru.

The company has been actively expanding its footprint in India, partnering with prominent conglomerates like Reliance and Tata Group, and hiring for various roles, including AI deployment engineers and solutions engineers. With India's vast developer base, over a billion internet users, and soaring demand for generative AI, the country has become a key focus area for US AI companies, including OpenAI's rival Anthropic, which also has a presence in India. OpenAI's aggressive expansion in India is driven by the rapid adoption of its ChatGPT technology in the country, positioning it for significant growth in this critical market.
