OpenAI has temporarily halted development of its Stargate UK data center initiative, a source familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. The project, developed in collaboration with NVIDIA, was designed to provide the UK government with dedicated, onshore computing power to run advanced AI models. Announced last September, the plan aimed to support applications where data must remain within national borders.
In a statement, OpenAI indicated the delay stems from current energy expenses and the evolving regulatory environment. The company affirmed its belief in the UK's strategic position in AI development, calling compute infrastructure essential to that future. It committed to revisiting the project once market conditions support a long-term investment of this scale.
Stargate UK was presented as a model for OpenAI's broader 'OpenAI for Countries' program, which seeks to build similar sovereign AI capacity with governments worldwide. Partners in this program include Australia, Greece, and the United Arab Emirates. The status of those parallel discussions following the UK pause is not yet clear. This move highlights the significant economic and policy challenges facing large-scale, national AI infrastructure projects even as demand for them grows.
