New data from corporate card and expense firm Ramp suggests OpenAI is starting to catch up to Anthropic in the U.S. business market. Ramp's numbers, covering over 70,000 American companies, show Anthropic had about 44% of paying business users in July, while OpenAI held nearly 40%. OpenAI lost its lead back in May, when Anthropic first pulled ahead.
However, Ramp economist Ara Kharazian notes that OpenAI is currently growing faster among this group in the third quarter so far. He credits GPT-5.6 Sol as a strong draw for developers, while calling Anthropic's Fable 5 disappointing in adoption and real-world use, partly due to price and data retention rules. Fable is pricier and aimed at narrower use cases, and Anthropic faced backlash over a 30-day data retention policy.
The data is not a full market measure, as it excludes large enterprises using other spend-management tools. Still, it shows business AI spending is volatile, with users switching as new models arrive. Ramp also reports the share of its customers paying for AI has climbed steadily, topping 50% in March and reaching nearly 56% by July.
