OpenAI confirmed on Thursday it has purchased the online talk show TBPN. The price was not disclosed. The acquisition arrives during a period of heightened public pressure for the AI giant, following a controversial Pentagon deal and the rise of a 'QuitGPT' protest movement.
TBPN, launched in 2024, streams daily commentary on tech industry news and has built a loyal following, particularly among AI researchers and OpenAI's own staff. Hosts John Coogan and Jordi Hays interview executives from major firms and dissect trends in real time. The show reportedly attracted $5 million in ad revenue last year.
The purchase raises immediate questions about fit. Just last month, OpenAI's Applications CEO Fidji Simo instructed teams to abandon side projects and concentrate on core products like ChatGPT and enterprise software. In a memo announcing the deal, Simo argued that OpenAI's mission to develop artificial general intelligence requires a new kind of public conversation. "The typical communications playbook does not apply," she wrote.
OpenAI stated TBPN will not be a revenue driver but will aid its communications strategy. The hosts will report to Chris Lehane, OpenAI's VP of global affairs. Simo and CEO Sam Altman both pledged the show will maintain editorial independence. "I don't expect them to go any easier on us," Altman posted on X.
Hays, a TBPN co-founder, said the move shifts the team "from commentary to real impact in how this technology is distributed and understood."
The deal follows OpenAI's recent shutdown of its Sora video tool, part of a stated refocusing effort. It also places OpenAI among tech figures like Jeff Bezos and Marc Benioff who have purchased media properties, inevitably testing perceptions of their independence.
