In a move to strengthen the safety of its automated systems, OpenAI confirmed this week the acquisition of Promptfoo, a security startup specializing in testing large language models. The deal, announced Monday, will see Promptfoo's technology folded into OpenAI Frontier, the company's platform for business-oriented AI agents.

As AI agents that execute complex digital tasks become more common, concerns about their vulnerability to manipulation and data breaches have grown in parallel. The acquisition signals a major effort by OpenAI to proactively address these security challenges for its enterprise clients.

Founded in 2024 by Ian Webster and Michael D'Angelo, Promptfoo developed a suite of tools, including an open-source library, that helps organizations identify security weaknesses in their AI models. The startup gained significant traction, with its products reportedly in use at more than a quarter of Fortune 500 companies. Despite its market presence, Promptfoo remained lean, having raised only $23 million in venture funding. Its valuation stood at $86 million as of last July.

OpenAI stated that integrating Promptfoo will enable automated security testing, risk monitoring, and compliance checks for AI agent workflows on its Frontier platform. The company also intends to maintain and expand Promptfoo's open-source projects. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
