In a decisive move to recapture a slipping corporate market, OpenAI has appointed researcher Barret Zoph to lead its enterprise sales efforts. The internal appointment, made just days after Zoph's controversial return to the company, signals a strategic shift as OpenAI confronts rising competition.

According to an internal memo, Zoph will now report directly to Applications CEO Fidji Simo, tasked with securing major deals in sectors like finance and biotech. His return follows a turbulent departure from Thinking Machines Lab, the startup he co-founded with former OpenAI executive Mira Murati. Zoph was fired from that role in January after internal clashes, but OpenAI had been negotiating for his return since last October, dismissing external concerns about his conduct.

The push comes as OpenAI's market position has weakened. While its ChatGPT Enterprise product launched successfully in 2023, its share of enterprise AI usage has fallen sharply, from 50% to 27% over the past two years. Rivals Anthropic and Google have gained significant ground. In response, CEO Sam Altman is leveraging Zoph's deep technical background—including prior roles at Google and key research on AI alignment—to convince corporate clients of OpenAI's edge.

Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar has declared 2026 the year for "practical adoption," focusing on real-world applications in health and science. The company is under pressure to monetize its technology, having ended last year with substantial revenue but even larger long-term computing commitments. For OpenAI, Zoph's mission is clear: transform advanced research into reliable revenue, and stop the corporate client bleed.
