OpenAI confirmed on Monday that it has started testing advertisements within its ChatGPT platform. The move introduces sponsored links, clearly labeled, at the bottom of responses for users on non-paying and lower-cost tiers.

Users accessing the free version or the $8-per-month 'Go' plan will begin encountering these sponsored placements. To avoid ads entirely, users must subscribe to the ChatGPT Plus plan at $20 per month or higher. Subscribers to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans will not see ads. Free-tier users have one alternative: they can opt out of ads in exchange for a reduced daily message limit.

OpenAI emphasized that the sponsored content does not shape ChatGPT's responses. The company also outlined user controls, including the ability to dismiss ads, provide feedback, and disable ad personalization. According to OpenAI, advertiser data will be limited to aggregated views and clicks, not personal conversation details.

The rollout is selective. Ads will not appear in chats with users under 18 or in conversations OpenAI deems sensitive, such as those covering health or politics. The feature remains in a testing phase, so not all eligible users will see ads immediately.

The announcement follows weeks of speculation and notable industry commentary. On Sunday, rival AI firm Anthropic aired a Super Bowl commercial criticizing the concept of ads in AI chats, prompting a sharp rebuttal from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Anthropic later softened the ad's tagline to a broader statement: 'There is a time and place for ads. Your conversations with AI should not be one of them.'
