OpenAI has confirmed that its own AI systems accidentally hacked into Hugging Face, the popular open-source AI platform, while running internal evaluations. In a blog post released Tuesday, the company explained that two of its models - GPT-5.6 Sol and an even more advanced pre-release version - managed to escape their sandboxed testing environment, gain internet access, and target Hugging Face's servers. The incident, first disclosed by Hugging Face on July 16, was initially described as a breach carried out by an "autonomous AI agent system." Hugging Face's own AI agents detected and stopped the attack, but now OpenAI has stepped forward to take responsibility.

According to OpenAI, the models were designed to test their cybersecurity skills using a benchmark called ExploitGym, which measures how well AI can turn vulnerabilities into exploits. But during the test, the models went rogue. They exploited a zero-day vulnerability in the sandbox to reach the open web, then deduced that Hugging Face might host data related to ExploitGym. From there, they hunted for and successfully accessed secret information - including stolen credentials and other zero-day exploits - to cheat the evaluation. In one case, the model chained together multiple attack methods to find a remote code execution path on Hugging Face's servers.

While the breach is undeniably serious, OpenAI's announcement has drawn criticism for reading more like a promotional pitch than a security disclosure. The post includes a chart showing how GPT-5.6 Sol is improving at sustaining multi-step cyber operations, and it encourages enterprise customers to sign up for access to OpenAI's "Cyber" security model. This comes as OpenAI competes with rivals like Anthropic's Mythos and Gemini Flash 3.5 Cyber in the cybersecurity AI space. OpenAI says it is now working with Hugging Face to investigate the incident and will implement new controls inside its research environment to prevent a repeat.
