OpenAI is making an unexpected move into media. The company confirmed its acquisition of TBPN, a popular live-streamed program known for its lengthy, analytical discussions on technology and business. The show will maintain its current distribution across YouTube, X, and other platforms.
In a note to staff, OpenAI's Head of Applications Fidji Simo stated TBPN will retain full editorial control over its content and guest selection. "That’s foundational to their credibility," Simo wrote, "and it’s something we’re explicitly protecting."
The acquisition points to a new strategy for OpenAI's external communications. Simo described the company's situation as atypical, driven by a mission to develop artificial general intelligence. She argued that standard corporate messaging is insufficient for fostering a substantive dialogue about AI's societal impact. "We need to create a space for a real, constructive conversation," she noted.
TBPN founders Jordi Hays and John Coogan will join OpenAI to assist with communications and marketing, reporting to strategy lead Chris Lehane. Simo expressed enthusiasm for applying their insight to help the public grasp AI's practical effects.
For Hays and Coogan, the shift from observers to participants was a considered decision. "After getting to know Sam and the OpenAI team," Hays said, "what stood out was their openness to feedback. Moving from commentary to real impact in how this technology is distributed and understood globally is important to us."
The purchase arrives shortly after OpenAI discontinued its video generation tool, Sora, underscoring a pivot from creating AI-generated video to producing human-led discussion about the technology itself.
