Open Source AI Poised to Fuel Canada's Next Economic Wave, Study Finds

A new economic study paints a robust picture of artificial intelligence as a primary engine for Canada's prosperity through the next decade. Commissioned by Meta and conducted by the Linux Foundation, the research indicates that AI could contribute an additional $180 billion to the national economy annually by 2030, and potentially boost GDP by 9% by 2035.

The report identifies a critical opportunity for Canadian businesses to move from experimentation to widespread implementation. While over a quarter of organizations have fully adopted AI, the study suggests the majority have yet to integrate it into core operations. Here, open source AI models are highlighted as a practical lever for acceleration, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises. These models reduce financial barriers, allow for faster customization, and shorten development cycles, enabling a shift from pilot projects to full-scale production.

Contrary to fears of widespread automation displacing workers, the data points to job creation and enhanced productivity. Nearly 90% of Canadian firms using AI report no net job losses. The study projects generative AI could raise worker productivity by 8% and create more than 35,000 new, innovation-driven roles in the next five years as work evolves toward higher-value tasks.

It recommends broader use of open source tools to help businesses deploy technology faster, equip workers with applicable skills, and transform academic breakthroughs into market-ready products.
