Match Group’s OkCupid has settled a long-running Federal Trade Commission lawsuit stemming from a 2014 data-sharing arrangement. The agency alleged the dating platform provided three million user photos to Clarifai, an AI software firm specializing in facial recognition, without proper user consent or disclosure.
The FTC argued this transfer violated OkCupid’s own privacy policy, which permitted sharing only with service providers or affiliated businesses. Regulators classified Clarifai as an unrelated third party, stating users were neither informed of the practice nor offered an opt-out. The data reportedly included location information alongside the photos.
In a statement to Engadget, an OkCupid spokesperson said the company settled without admitting wrongdoing or a financial penalty to resolve the historical matter. They emphasized that current operations and strengthened data governance do not reflect the 2014 allegations.
The settlement imposes a permanent prohibition on Match Group and its subsidiary Humor Rainbow from misrepresenting their data collection purposes, the types of information gathered, or user options to limit collection. This case surfaces as a pointed reminder for businesses: the use of personal data to train or refine AI models, even by partners, carries significant legal and reputational peril if not handled with explicit transparency. OkCupid separately addressed security vulnerabilities in 2020, underscoring the persistent challenge of safeguarding user information.
