New York University's Tisch School of the Arts is integrating generative AI directly into its curriculum through a new partnership with Runway. The agreement provides students in specific programs with free access to the company's video-generation tools and dedicated training.

The initiative includes the university-wide Hyper Cinema Lab and the graduate-level Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) and Interactive Media Arts (ITM) programs, known for experimental work blending technology and art. The school's main, traditional film production track is not currently part of the deal.

According to Tisch dean Rubén Polendo, the move is an extension of the school's philosophy. "Our film programs teach many ways of making films and invite students to weave their own process," Polendo said. "This is an invitation to try another mode of working." He described the effort as a live experiment in defining the relationship between human artists and machine-assisted creation.

Runway CEO and ITP alumnus Cristóbal Valenzuela framed the access as a fundamental shift in artistic education. "Twenty years ago when you went to film school, the thing they gave you was a camera and maybe an Adobe subscription," Valenzuela noted. "Now they're giving you access to Runway." The school will offer a substantial pool of generation credits, which are typically costly, making the technology a practical option for student projects.

While students can still choose traditional production methods, the program lowers the barrier to using AI. The partnership reflects Runway's strategy to embed its tools with both current industry players and the next generation of creators. Valenzuela reports minimal institutional resistance, stating acceptance in studios and schools is now widespread.

Polendo acknowledges differing views across academia but positions Tisch's approach as forward-looking. "We welcome the future," he said. "That's the whole proposition here."
