Nvidia is reportedly in talks to provide a roughly $250 billion financial backstop for OpenAI, helping the ChatGPT creator secure a massive data center project in Ohio. The facility, a proposed 10-gigawatt complex developed by SoftBank subsidiary SB Energy, would be one of the largest compute hubs ever built. For Nvidia, the move represents yet another example of the chipmaker deepening its ties with companies that buy its products - a pattern that's starting to make some investors uneasy.
The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that Nvidia's backing would allow OpenAI, which is still unprofitable, to raise debt at more favorable terms. Nvidia has already invested $30 billion in OpenAI this year, plus stakes in Anthropic and several so-called neoclouds that rent out its chips. While Nvidia says these investments support the AI ecosystem and offer attractive returns, Monday's 4% drop in Nvidia's stock suggests the market is growing wary of circular deals that tie the industry's fate to a handful of interconnected players.
Yet there's a positive side: OpenAI's appetite for compute underscores the insatiable demand for AI infrastructure. If OpenAI is willing to pursue unconventional financing, publicly traded hyperscalers like Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, and Microsoft may keep spending despite recent stock pressure. For suppliers like Corning and Eaton, that's good news. But as Jim Cramer recently noted, investors now want to see those spending dollars translate into actual earnings - not just more promises of future capacity. The easy gains in tech may be behind us, and the smart money is increasingly looking beyond AI for returns. That doesn't mean abandoning Nvidia or AI, but it does mean broadening the portfolio to include companies benefiting from lower oil prices, lower interest rates, or other growth drivers - like Honeywell Aerospace or Johnson & Johnson. The Nvidia-OpenAI story is a reminder that even the hottest trades eventually need to show profit.
