Northwood Space, a startup aiming to modernize how satellite data is handled on Earth, announced significant financial and strategic momentum this week. The company closed a $100 million Series B funding round and separately secured a $49.8 million contract with the U.S. Space Force.
The contract tasks Northwood with augmenting the military's Satellite Control Network, a critical system for managing Defense Department satellites. The fresh capital will accelerate deployment of the company's proprietary 'Portal' system, a ground station technology using phased-array radar designed for faster, more flexible satellite communications.
In a media briefing, Northwood CEO Bridgit Mendler connected the company's progress to a broader push for speed in space capabilities. "Since our last funding announcement in April 2025, our progress underscores how ground infrastructure enables more advanced missions on tighter schedules," Mendler stated. She emphasized that a vertically integrated ground network is essential for rapidly deploying the important systems now being sent into orbit.
The announcements arrive as the demand for seamless data flow between space and Earth intensifies, a priority underscored by the Trump administration's continued focus on national security space architecture. Northwood's twin victories signal strong investor and government confidence in its approach to a foundational, yet often overlooked, segment of the space industry.
