In a swift strategic move, Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an artificial intelligence company founded by filmmaker Ben Affleck. The purchase, confirmed Thursday, follows Netflix's recent exit from negotiations for Warner Bros. Discovery and signals a targeted investment in production technology.
InterPositive, which operated quietly with a team of 16, develops AI tools specifically for filmmakers. Netflix plans to integrate the staff and make the technology exclusive to its own productions. The deal underscores a public stance Netflix executives have repeated for years: that AI should enhance content quality rather than primarily reduce expenses. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos articulated this in 2024, stating the larger opportunity lies in making content "10% better" rather than "50% cheaper."
The acquisition arrives as entertainment unions begin new contract discussions with major studios and streamers, aiming to prevent a repeat of the 2023 labor strikes where AI protections were a central issue. This context ensures the deal will be closely examined.
According to a source familiar with the negotiations, Affleck first discussed InterPositive with Netflix executives last autumn. The talks progressed alongside a renewed partnership with Affleck and Matt Damon's production company, Artists Equity, which secured a first-look deal with Netflix earlier this week.
Affleck, who began exploring AI in 2022, said his initial wariness transformed into a focused mission after observing some tech companies attempting to "get the human out of it." InterPositive's approach is distinct: it avoids text-to-video generation, instead using visual data captured from human performers on a secure stage to train its models. The goal, Affleck explained, is to build tools that protect the nuanced, human judgment inherent to filmmaking - from the distortion of a lens to the shift of light in a scene.
Netflix content chief Bela Bajaria stated the move aligns with the company's principle of supporting creative freedom, adding that new tools should expand possibilities for writers, directors, and crews. CTO Elizabeth Stone affirmed the shared belief that "innovation should empower storytellers, not replace them." By fully acquiring InterPositive instead of licensing its technology, Netflix is betting that proprietary, artist-developed AI will provide a unique edge in the competitive streaming market.
