Shares in major neocloud companies dropped Monday after Elon Musk predicted that more than 200 firms in the sector could collapse.

Nebius, CoreWeave and Iren each fell more than 4% in early premarket trading before paring losses to around 2% lower. The decline adds to pressure on a sector already under investor scrutiny over debt-heavy expansion and doubts about returns on the large AI infrastructure buildout.

In a Sunday post on X, Musk said debt markets had "almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn't have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers," warning that the 200+ neoclouds face "guppy-level death and consolidation." Musk's SpaceX runs its own data centers selling computing capacity, putting it in direct competition with neoclouds.

His post replied to Chamath Palihapitiya of Social Capital, who argued that 2027 will bring "a lot of partially stranded compute" that is paid for but underearning or sitting idle, making it a turbulent year that clears out bad bets and consolidates a few players.

Neocloud stocks have fallen sharply over the past month, with CoreWeave and Nebius down more than 30% and Iren about 40%. The sell-off began after the spread on CoreWeave's five-year credit default swaps reached levels typically seen as distress signals, and its bond yields climbed.

Nvidia, an investor in several neoclouds, sought to reassure the sector at its GTC event in Berlin last week. CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC demand is "off the charts" and what's missing is working capital, saying the gap between demand for and availability of capital "is going to get solved."

Nebius chief revenue officer Marc Boroditsky told CNBC his company doesn't carry the debt CoreWeave does and would sell out its 2027 capacity. Iren Co-CEO Daniel Roberts said customer demand is unchanged, with conversations covering multiples of its possible capacity and 2028 now coming into focus.
