Nebius announced a substantial new investment in European AI infrastructure on Tuesday. The company plans to construct a data center in Lappeenranta, Finland, with a projected capacity of 310 megawatts. If realized, the facility would rank among the continent's largest dedicated AI compute sites. Initial customer operations are slated for 2027.
"We have been building in Finland for many years and are pleased to be expanding our presence here," stated Nebius CEO Arkady Volozh. He described the Lappeenranta project as a major step in the company's global infrastructure expansion, one that will substantially advance its capacity objectives.
The move is part of a broader, accelerating trend across Europe. Just this week, French AI firm Mistral secured $830 million in debt financing to operate a data center near Paris. Earlier this year, a separate 1.2-billion-euro initiative for Swedish data centers was announced. In the UK, startup Nscale recently raised $2 billion, earmarking funds for AI data center development in Europe and the US. Other significant projects include a planned 1.4-gigawatt AI campus in France and a Brookfield investment of up to $9.9 billion for a Swedish data center.
These parallel developments signal a concerted, capital-intensive effort to build the computational foundation required for next-generation AI systems within European borders.
