Musk Calls for Rival AI Labs to Test Each Other's Models

Elon Musk said top artificial intelligence companies should test each other's models before releasing them to the public, speaking Monday at the All-in Summit in Los Angeles.
Musk named OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and "three or four of the leading Chinese companies" as those that should let rivals run a "test harness" on their models to evaluate safety. "Instead of grading your own homework, you would at least have competitors grading your homework and raising the alarm if they see concerns," he said.
The remarks came after Anthropic, OpenAI and other AI leaders spent the weekend warning about the technology's harms and calling for a slowdown in model development. Musk said his peer-review idea may not be perfect, but "the odds that you will find issues are dramatically greater."
He acknowledged that rival labs have not agreed to the proposal. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has suggested labs could accept third-party assessments from "embedded evaluators" who would verify safety practices.
The Trump administration has pushed back on calls for greater limits on AI. President Donald Trump referred to fears over AI as a "hoax" and a "scam," while National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett told CNBC the private sector is the "right place" to address concerns.
A spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry called the push for a slowdown "fear mongering," according to a Reuters translation. Musk said his suggestion is "a step in the right direction" and "probably something that China would agree to."
