French AI lab Mistral AI is reportedly in early-stage talks to secure approximately €3 billion ($3.5 billion) in new funding, according to Bloomberg sources. The round would peg the company's valuation at roughly €20 billion ($23.15 billion) - nearly double its €11.7 billion valuation from last September's Series C.
Founded in 2023, Mistral has carved out a distinct identity in the AI arms race. While American labs like OpenAI and Anthropic keep their models tightly controlled, Mistral releases some foundational large language models with open weights, letting enterprises customize them freely. The company also sells closed models for specific tasks: programming, voice cloning, and optical character recognition.
Mistral's timing is sharp. As European governments grow wary of US tech dominance, Mistral markets itself as a "sovereign" alternative. It's building a data center near Paris and has inked deals with the French military, Luxembourg's government, and several major European corporations.
Yet the scale gap is stark. Mistral has raised only about $4 billion to date, per PitchBook - a fraction of OpenAI's $186 billion or Anthropic's $161.25 billion. Those American labs also command far higher valuations, reflecting their lead in revenue and enterprise adoption.
Mistral declined to comment on the reported funding talks.
