Mississippi is taking a significant step towards improving road safety with the introduction of AI camera trailers designed to monitor and detect traffic violations. The state's Department of Public Safety has leased mobile traffic enforcement systems from Acusensus, a company that also provides similar technology to neighboring Arkansas. The three-year contract, worth $2. 052 million, is funded through federal grants and aims to reduce crashes in high-risk areas such as construction zones and locations where traditional traffic enforcement is challenging.
The trailer-mounted cameras are capable of capturing high-quality images of drivers engaging in hazardous behaviors, including texting while driving, speeding, and failing to secure child passengers, even at speeds of up to 186 miles per hour. When a camera detects a traffic infraction, it sends images and data to an officer in real-time, who can then pull over the vehicle and issue a citation. While some lawmakers have raised concerns about the potential invasion of privacy, others have expressed support for the system as long as human officers remain responsible for issuing citations. State Senator Joey Fillingane has stated that he would oppose any move towards fully automated ticketing.
The deployment of these AI-powered cameras marks a new era in traffic enforcement for Mississippi, and drivers can expect to see them in operation across the state. As the technology continues to evolve, it will be important to strike a balance between improving road safety and protecting individual privacy rights.
