In a bid to make its Surface devices more accessible, Microsoft has introduced new, lower-priced versions of its 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop. These more affordable models come with 8GB of RAM, half the memory of their predecessors, and are priced at $849 and $949, respectively. This move marks a significant shift in Microsoft's pricing strategy, particularly after the company increased the prices of its base Surface models in April 2026. The new devices retain the same core specifications as their higher-end counterparts, including an 8-core Snapdragon X Plus chip and 256GB of storage.

However, they will not support Copilot Plus, Microsoft's integrated AI technology that requires at least 16GB of RAM to function. While these new Surface devices are more budget-friendly, they still face stiff competition from other affordable laptops, such as the $599 MacBook Neo, which has been making waves in the market with its impressive performance and competitive pricing. Microsoft's decision to offer more affordable Surface options may help the company regain its footing in the market, but it remains to be seen how these reduced-memory devices will resonate with consumers.
