In a significant leadership shift, Microsoft Gaming has appointed Asha Sharma as its new CEO, replacing the departing Phil Spencer. Xbox President Sarah Bond is also exiting the company. Sharma, a former executive at Instacart and Meta who most recently led Microsoft's CoreAI product division, steps into the role at a pivotal moment for the industry.

Her appointment signals a clear intent to deepen the integration of artificial intelligence into game development, following previous experiments like an AI gaming companion and AI-generated game levels. However, in an internal memo obtained by The Verge, Sharma outlined a philosophy that seeks balance over pure automation.

She committed the company to inventing new ways to play and new business models, acknowledging that monetization and AI will shape gaming's future. Crucially, Sharma explicitly rejected the pursuit of short-term gains through what she termed 'soulless AI slop,' vowing not to overwhelm the platform with low-quality, algorithmically generated content.

'Games are and always will be art, crafted by humans, and created with the most innovative technology provided by us,' Sharma wrote. Her other commitments include a focus on building exceptional games that earn player loyalty and a continued prioritization of the Xbox platform. The move sets a tone for Microsoft's gaming strategy: leveraging advanced technology while aiming to preserve the creative heart of the medium.
