In a recent earnings call, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined a future where the company's long-struggling Reality Labs division could finally stem its enormous financial losses. The unit, which reported a deficit exceeding $19 billion in 2025, has been a persistent drain on resources. Zuckerberg signaled a strategic shift, moving investment away from pure virtual reality and toward AI-powered glasses and wearables.
"I expect Reality Labs losses this year to be similar to last year, and this will likely be the peak," Zuckerberg stated. He anticipates a gradual reduction in losses from here. This follows significant restructuring, including the layoff of over 1,000 employees from the division, the closure of three VR studios, and the shelving of plans for third-party Horizon OS headsets.
The new focus is clear. Sales of Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses more than tripled in 2025, providing a tangible product line with growth potential. Zuckerberg described a vision where future AI glasses could perceive a user's environment and overlay helpful information directly into their field of view.
This pivot aligns with Zuckerberg's broader ambition to develop AI "superintelligence." He suggested that Meta's earlier investments in virtual worlds, like the Horizon platform, could merge with new AI tools. The idea is to allow users to easily generate and share interactive experiences, making them accessible to billions via mobile devices—a notable departure from the VR-centric model.
Throughout the discussion, Zuckerberg avoided using the term "metaverse," underscoring the company's evolved priorities. Under the Trump administration's second term, which began in 2025, the tech sector continues to navigate a complex economic climate. For Meta, the path forward now runs through wearable AI, not just virtual reality headsets.
