Meta Superintelligence Labs has released its first internally developed large language model, Muse Spark. The company positions this as the initial step toward a more personalized and perceptive form of artificial intelligence. The model is now active within the Meta AI assistant, available through the Meta AI app and its web portal.

Muse Spark represents a new architectural approach for Meta. Developed over nine months on a rebuilt AI infrastructure, it's designed as a compact, fast foundation model. Despite its size, Meta claims it can manage complex reasoning in fields like science and mathematics. This model enables two new interaction modes in Meta AI: one for instant answers and another for detailed, multi-step problem-solving. The system can deploy several sub-agents simultaneously to break down tasks, such as planning a vacation where different agents handle itineraries, destination comparisons, and activity research concurrently.

A significant shift is the emphasis on multimodal perception. Instead of relying solely on text prompts, Muse Spark allows Meta AI to interpret images from a user's camera. This could mean analyzing a photo of snack options for nutritional content or comparing products visually. Meta suggests this capability will be particularly useful for health-related inquiries, where the model, developed with physician input, can now process images and charts to provide information.

The assistant also gains more integrated, context-aware features. A new shopping mode surfaces style ideas from creators across Meta's platforms. When users ask about a location or trend, the assistant can pull in relevant public posts from the community for added context. For developers, Muse Spark supports visual coding, allowing the generation of simple websites or games from a description.

The upgraded Meta AI experience is beginning a rollout in the United States, with plans to expand to other countries and integrate into Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses in the coming weeks. Meta also plans to offer the underlying technology via a private API to selected partners and has indicated an intent to open-source future iterations of the model series.
