Meta Platforms is set to release its newest AI models to the public without charge. This decision arrives as rivals like OpenAI and Google aggressively commercialize their systems, placing Meta's open-source approach under a microscope. The company plans to offer its next Llama model freely, a move that could either establish an industry standard or become a costly subsidy for competitors.

Mark Zuckerberg's rationale hinges on indirect benefits. He argues that widespread adoption of Meta's models will steer developers toward its infrastructure and tools, ultimately driving more activity to its social media and advertising engines. The models themselves are not the intended profit center. However, this theory faces pressure. Meta's integrated AI assistant has not seen the user engagement the company anticipated, and the path from a developer downloading Llama to someone clicking a Facebook ad is long and unproven.

Financially, the stakes are immense. Meta has signaled plans to spend over $60 billion on capital expenditures in 2025, heavily focused on AI data centers. Meanwhile, its Reality Labs division reported a $4.6 billion loss last quarter. While Llama models are popular with developers, that enthusiasm doesn't yet translate to a clear revenue stream to offset these investments. Unlike Amazon or Google, Meta lacks a cloud services arm to monetize the models' operation.

Internally, the open-source strategy serves as a talent magnet, appealing to researchers like Meta's AI chief Yann LeCun, who champions open science. Externally, it positions Meta's technology as a counterweight to Chinese AI models. Yet, with other capable free models emerging, the strategic value of Meta's giveaway could dilute. The coming months, as the next Llama model debuts, will test whether this high-spending, open-handed strategy is visionary or merely a very expensive plan B.
