A recent report by the New York Times has revealed that Meta Platforms, led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, is developing a prediction market platform. The project, codenamed 'Arena', will operate independently of Meta's social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram. According to sources familiar with the plans, the app will utilize a points system, similar to those found in video games, for trading purposes. Although the platform may eventually incorporate real-money transactions, it will initially rely on this points-based system.

Meta aims to tap into its vast user base to drive traffic to the platform. The news has already sparked a reaction in the market, with sports betting platforms DraftKings and FanDuel parent company Flutter Entertainment experiencing declines of over 2% and nearly 2%, respectively. Trading platform Robinhood, which offers contracts from various prediction market platforms, also saw a decline following the report. These companies have faced concerns over the potential disruption of their sports gambling businesses by prediction market platforms.

As Meta's plans unfold, it will be interesting to see how the company's entry into this space impacts the existing market dynamics.
