Meta is pushing deeper into AI-powered search with the launch of "AI Mode" on Facebook, a feature that mines public posts, Groups, and Reels to generate direct answers to user questions. Instead of scanning a list of links, you type a plain-language query and get a synthesized response drawn from real conversations happening across the platform. The move is part of a broader effort to make Meta's AI bot more useful and keep people engaged longer.
The feature arrives alongside two other updates: editing tools for video montages - including collage cutouts and transition effects - and AI photo presets that let you swap outfits or hairstyles. Sports fans can virtually don a team jersey through the "Wear It" option in Stories, or revamp their profile picture with a new wardrobe via the "Restyle profile picture with AI" menu.
But AI Mode raises the same reliability concerns that have dogged Google's AI search on Reddit. Because the answers come from everyday users - not vetted sources - there's a genuine risk of surfacing outdated or misleading chatter. Meta is betting the convenience of instant, conversational answers outweighs the accuracy trade-off.
These releases follow a string of recent additions: animated profile pictures in February, an auto-reply bot for Marketplace in March, and an AI assistant for creators earlier this month that suggests optimal posting times and summarizes audience comments. Taken together, they signal a clear strategy: make Facebook stickier through AI, then monetize that stickiness with new subscription tiers - starting at $3.99 a month - that unlock additional features.
