In a significant move to secure its artificial intelligence future, Meta has entered a multi-billion dollar agreement with chip designer AMD. Announced Tuesday, the partnership commits Meta to purchasing vast quantities of AMD's Instinct graphics processors over several years to power AI development across its platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
The scale is substantial. Meta stated the deal will provide computing power equivalent to six gigawatts. For perspective, the U.S. Department of Energy notes one gigawatt can power about 100 million LED light bulbs. This hardware will form the backbone of the advanced AI models Meta is racing to develop.
As part of the arrangement, Meta will acquire a 10% ownership stake in AMD. This follows a nearly identical deal AMD struck with OpenAI last October, which also granted a 10% stake. AMD CEO Lisa Su said the company is "proud to expand our strategic partnership with Meta as they push the boundaries of AI at unprecedented scale."
For consumers, the immediate effect may be subtle. However, these back-to-back megadeals underscore a fierce scramble among tech giants to lock down critical AI hardware as global supplies tighten. This competition for components like high-performance GPUs and memory could contribute to rising costs for a wide range of electronics, from computers to vehicles, in the coming years.
The investment clearly signals that Meta's AI ambitions remain a top priority. The company continues to vie with rivals including OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google in a high-stakes effort to define the next generation of AI products.
