Meta and Broadcom Forge Deeper Chip Alliance to Power AI Ambitions

Meta is doubling down on its custom silicon strategy through a significant expansion of its partnership with semiconductor giant Broadcom. The two companies will co-develop several future generations of Meta's in-house MTIA (Meta Training and Inference Accelerator) chips, the specialized hardware that drives AI features across its apps and services.

This multi-year agreement, which includes an initial deployment commitment exceeding one gigawatt of power, is structured to accelerate Meta's custom chip roadmap. The company recently stated it plans to develop four new MTIA versions within two years to handle tasks from social media recommendations to generative AI. Broadcom will contribute its XPU platform for designing custom AI accelerators, along with expertise in chip design, advanced packaging, and high-bandwidth Ethernet networking to connect Meta's sprawling AI data centers.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg framed the partnership as essential for building the computing foundation required to deliver "personal superintelligence" at a global scale. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan called it the start of a "sustained, multi-generation roadmap" to support Meta's anticipated growth. Notably, Tan will transition from his seat on Meta's board of directors to an advisory role focused on the company's silicon strategy, a move attributed to the expanded scope of the collaboration.

For Meta, controlling more of its AI hardware stack through custom chips like MTIA is a strategic imperative. It represents a long-term bet on performance and efficiency, aiming to reduce reliance on generic processors and manage the enormous costs of running AI for billions of users. This deepened tie-up with Broadcom signals that Meta's infrastructure build-out is entering a new, more intensive phase.
