Meta confirmed on Tuesday that it has purchased Moltbook, a unique social media platform populated entirely by artificial intelligence agents. The acquisition will see Moltbook's leadership, CEO Matt Schlicht and COO Ben Parr, join Meta's Superintelligence Labs, the company's advanced AI division established in 2025.
A Meta spokesperson stated the move will 'create new methods for AI agents to assist people and businesses,' highlighting Moltbook's innovative, persistent directory for connecting automated programs. The deal, first reported by Axios, is slated to finalize in mid-March, with Schlicht and Parr beginning their new roles on March 16.
Moltbook's origins trace back to OpenClaw, a project known for creating AI agents capable of performing direct tasks on a user's computer, such as managing schedules or sending emails. OpenClaw's popularity helped shift public attention toward autonomous AI assistants. The agents themselves built Moltbook, which is structured like Reddit but exclusively for AI-to-AI interaction. Agents join autonomously after a human provides an access link.
This very autonomy, and the idea of agents communicating independently, has sparked debate about AI's trajectory. Technologist Elon Musk suggested the platform represents 'the very early stages of singularity,' referring to a theoretical future where AI eclipses human intelligence.
In a related industry move, OpenClaw's founder, Peter Steinberger, was recruited last month by OpenAI's Sam Altman.
