A sharp and sustained increase in memory chip prices is now inevitable, according to industry analysts. The catalyst is a supply chain unable to match the explosive demand from artificial intelligence infrastructure projects, a shift that will soon translate to higher costs for consumer electronics.
TechRadar reports that analyst firm TrendForce forecasts record-breaking price increases for DRAM, the working memory in everything from servers to smartphones. The primary driver is the AI sector's need for specialized High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a premium product used in processors from Nvidia and AMD. Major cloud providers are aggressively buying up this supply.
To meet that demand, manufacturers like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are shifting factory capacity away from standard DDR5 memory—the kind used in new PCs and laptops. This creates a direct shortage for the consumer market. With inventory already low following production cuts made during a 2022 downturn, there is little buffer to absorb the shock.
For the public, the consequences are practical and immediate. Building or upgrading a computer will become more expensive. DDR5 memory kits, especially the high-speed modules favored by gamers, are likely to see the most significant jumps. The timing is difficult, as new PC platforms from Intel and AMD now require DDR5, eliminating cheaper DDR4 as an alternative for new systems.
While NAND flash memory for solid-state drives faces different pressures, its prices are also expected to rise, ending a long period of declining storage costs. Analysts suggest this market tightness has structural staying power, fueled by continuous AI investment and complex global supply chains. The advice to buyers is straightforward: the era of falling memory prices is over.
