The smart home industry's bet on Matter, a standard designed to simplify device interoperability, is still ongoing. Four years after its launch, Matter has made significant progress, but its adoption has been slower than expected. At the recent Unify conference, the mood was optimistic, with many industry leaders acknowledging the challenges that Matter still faces. Despite these challenges, the standard has achieved a lot in a relatively short time, with over 1,200 certified products and 940 member companies.

The latest version of the spec, Matter 1. 6, introduces a new feature called Joint Fabric, which allows for the creation of a single smart home network that can be controlled by any Matter platform. However, the question remains whether the major platforms, including Apple, Google, and Amazon, will adopt this new feature. The industry's collaboration on Matter is unprecedented, with companies working together to solve problems and improve the standard.

For example, when Ikea launched its new Matter-over-Thread smart home products, the industry came together to troubleshoot and fix issues. While there are still concerns about the continued investment in Matter by some companies, the standard's progress and the industry's commitment to it are clear. As one industry leader noted, the goal is to make Matter synonymous with smart home connectivity, just like Wi-Fi is synonymous with wireless internet. The challenge now is to bring this simplicity to consumers and make the Matter logo a trusted symbol of interoperability.

With continued investment and collaboration, Matter may finally fulfill its promise of a simple, reliable, and interoperable smart home experience.
